Every house has a dead zone. In ours, it was the upstairs landing: 42 inches wide, 54 inches deep, pinched between a bedroom door that swung outward and a linen closet that had probably never been opened to its full width in its life. A space that should have been a transition point had become an obstacle course we navigated on autopilot, turning sideways to pass each other in the morning.
We brought in a designer for a single working session. Not a full-service engagement — just a few hours, a tape measure, and a fresh set of eyes. What followed was less dramatic than a renovation and more instructive than we expected.
The First Step Was Actually Measuring the Space Correctly
Before anything else, the designer asked us to clear the landing entirely and re-measure. Not just the floor footprint, but the clearance at door swing, the ceiling height above the stair nosing, and the wall depth on either side of the closet opening.
Here’s where most self-directed projects go wrong: people measure the floor and stop. On a staircase landing, the relevant dimension is the clear walking path — meaning you subtract the door swing radius from your usable floor area. Our outward-swinging bedroom door was eating 14 inches of effective width every time it opened. On paper, we had 42 inches of landing width. In practice, with the door in motion, we had 28 inches of clearance. That’s technically above the IRC’s minimum handrail-to-wall clearance for a passage (which requires 36 inches of stairway width, though landing rules differ), but it felt like a bottleneck because it was one.
If you’re working through a similar problem, take a blank sheet and sketch the landing to scale at 1/4 inch = 1 foot before you move anything. A laser measure gets you the room dimensions in seconds; the slower work is plotting each door arc by hand and seeing where the overlaps land. Once you can see the geometry on paper, the constraints become obvious in a way they never are when you’re just standing in the space.
The Three Changes That Actually Made a Difference
The designer’s recommendations fell into three categories, none of which required structural work.
1. Rehang the bedroom door to swing inward. This was the most consequential single change. An inward-swinging door needs clearance on the bedroom side rather than the landing side. In that particular bedroom, there was a dead wall to the right of the door interior — nothing behind where the door would now rest open. The re-hang took a carpenter roughly two hours and cost in the range we’d expect for basic carpentry labor in our area (verify any estimate locally before budgeting). The landing effectively gained 14 inches of functional width overnight.
2. Replace the bi-fold closet doors with a curtain rod and panel. The linen closet’s bi-fold doors projected 10 inches into the landing when partially open and required a 24-inch swing arc to open fully. A simple ceiling-mounted curtain rod with a single linen panel — slid to one side when the closet is in use — reduced that projection to zero. This is the kind of change that sounds cosmetic but is entirely spatial in effect.
3. Raise the visual ceiling with a single pendant light. The landing had a standard-height 8-foot ceiling, but felt lower because there was no light source above — just a wall sconce that threw light sideways and cast the stairwell in shadow. A low-profile pendant hung at the center of the landing, on an existing ceiling electrical box, changed the perceived height of the space noticeably. If you’re working with a landing that lacks overhead wiring, plug-in pendants or even well-placed clip-on lights can approximate the effect before you commit to running new electrical.
Why the Walls Stayed Bare (On Purpose)
The designer’s one firm instruction was to leave the landing walls undecorated for at least two months after the changes. Her reasoning: the common instinct after opening up a tight space is to immediately fill it with shelving, hooks, or art — which often recreates the original problem in a different form. A cramped landing usually got cramped because accumulation happened gradually and invisibly. Give yourself time to understand how you actually move through the reopened space before you introduce anything to the walls.
This mirrors the thinking in well-documented small-space design: the goal is to preserve movement, not maximize storage. You can see the same logic applied in spaces far more constrained than a typical landing — this family of four in a 450-square-foot studio made similar decisions about where not to add furniture as much as where to add it.
What the Designer Charged — and Whether It Was Worth It
For a single working session plus a written summary of recommendations, the fee was modest by design-consultation standards, in a range you’d need to verify with local professionals depending on your market and the consultant’s background. The framing we found most useful: think of it as paying for a set of observations you can’t generate yourself because you’re too accustomed to the space. Familiarity is its own blind spot.
Two of the three changes cost us essentially nothing beyond labor. The door rehang was the only real expenditure. The curtain-and-rod solution came in under $80 in materials. The pendant we already owned.
What to Do Before You Call Anyone
Before booking a consultation — or attempting this yourself — do the following in order:
- Measure floor dimensions, ceiling height, and all door swing arcs. Record them.
- Sketch the landing to scale and draw the door arcs on the sketch.
- Identify how many inches of clear walking path you actually have at the tightest moment.
- Note whether the bottleneck is a door, stored objects, furniture, or just poor lighting that compresses the perceived space.
- Check which walls have electrical boxes and which walls are load-bearing (the latter affects any future structural ideas, though most landing interventions don’t touch structure).
The sketch in step 2 is the one most people skip, and it’s the one that makes every subsequent decision faster.
